Growing People is a charity providing Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) sessions for people with mental health issues in Hertfordshire.
STH is a therapeutic practice that uses carefully chosen, garden-based activities to address specifically identified health goals – in our case, mental health. STH is being increasingly recognised around the world to support recovery from a range of mental and physical health conditions.
It works like this: our gardeners (that’s what our service users are called) come along once a week for group sessions, and take part in a range of activities, often in a group – like planning and planting up a new bed, propagating plants for our herb nursery, digging in compost, or harvesting vegetables.
Perhaps most important of all, they chat, spend time together, talking about gardening, the weather, the wildlife, worries and hopes.
If you would like to work with us or would like to refer someone you know, we always recommend that the first step should be a personal visit to our premises.
